Hormones and Hair Loss
The general principle we have followed regarding male hair loss for the past ten years is as follows:
Some of the testosterone produced by the body or that is being replaced in the body, converts to the stronger form of testosterone known as DHT. DHT is important to the body for a number of reasons including the hormone primarily responsible for sex drive. However, some men and women have DHT sensitive hair follicles usually due to heredity. These hair follicles are usually concentrated on top of the head. Doctors will often treat DHT hair loss with a medication such as Propecia / finasteride. Propecia restricts the conversion of testosterone to DHT. The problems: 1) men using Propecia often have to balance sex drive against hair loss and 2) there are documented cases of men permanently losing their sex drive on this medication. Needless to say we do not use this medication. We have a much easier and safer way of treating this issue. Please read on, it is explained after dealing with thyroid. Like most hormones thyroid starts to decline around age 26 to 28. We will not repeat what you can read on the thyroid page. If you have low thyroid replacing it to healthy levels (T3 free = 350pg to 425pg) will have significant health benefits beyond stopping thyroid related hair loss. Fixing the thyroid usually stops hair lose in about 7 days. Many then experience re-growth. There is a simple and effective solution for both DHT and thyroid related hair loss. Using a prescription shampoo containing progesterone and T3 plus a scalp stimulant will, in most cases, halt hair loss immediately. In the case of thyroid related hair lose, there is a good chance it will result in hair re-growth. Progesterone stops the conversion of testosterone to DHT at the hair follicle. T3 negates the effect of inadequate thyroid. We have the shampoo made up at our affiliated compounding pharmacy. Women experience these very same issues. The above is equally as effective for women as for men. If you have questions – give us a call at 800-859-7511
