Testosterone and Depression

T and Depression

You have read the symptoms of Andropause.  This page focuses on just one – depression.

As testosterone declines, men become mild to moderately depressed.  They lose their zest for life.  They lose their edge, their fire.  Some like to say they lose their “Mojo”.  Because it comes on slowly most men are not aware it is occurring.  It usually takes something occurring in a man’s life for him to say “I wish I felt like I did when I was in my twenties”.

Men are typically more assertive, protective and competitive.  That fire is lit and fueled by testosterone.

When I am out in public and in answer to the question “what do you do?”, in telling them, they usually think men would be interested in what we do because they want their sex drive back.  That is part of it, but most men will say “I just want feel better”.   That translates to getting rid of a building depression – depression worsens as T levels decline.

We have an alarming number of men who come to us that have been put on an antidepressant by their family doctor.  It produces a dependence and negatively affects sex drive and function.

We raise testosterone to healthy levels.  Depression lifts in about 1 to 2 weeks.  Those on antidepressants, usually wean themselves off in 60 to 90 days.
