What Causes Hair Loss in Men?
Though it has been studied extensively for years there is surprisingly little know about hair loss and growth. The general principle we have followed regarding male hair loss for the past 12 years is as follows:
- If hair loss begins prior to age 40, it is probably due to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (the stronger form of testosterone in men).
- If hair loss begins after age 40, it is most likely due to low thyroid.
- Stress is known to turn hair gray. It is therefore assumed that stress also contributes to hair loss.
DHT: Hair loss in men occurs when the body converts some of its testosterone to the stronger form of testosterone, DHT. DHT is important to the body for a number of reasons, mainly because it is the male hormone primarily responsible for sex drive. But DHT is also responsible for hair loss in men younger than 40. Some men and women have DHT-sensitive hair follicles, generally due to heredity. DHT sensitive hair follicles are usually concentrated on the top of the head, and when testosterone converts to DHT at DHT sensitive hair follicles, it may cause it to die.
Thyroid: Hair Loss in men can also be caused by a decline in thyroid hormones. Like other hormones, thyroid starts to decline around a man’s late 20s. If a man has low thyroid, restoring it to healthy levels (ideally T3 free is between 350pg and 425 pg) will have significant health benefits beyond stopping thyroid-related hair loss in men. Fixing the thyroid usually stops hair loss in about 7 to 14 days, after which, many experience re-growth. Note: It is thought, though not supported by studies, that thyroid is a more significant cause of hair loss than DHT. This is particularly true in women.
Stress: Another major cause of hair loss is stress. Because stress is such a major factor in aging, reducing stress and monitoring cortisol levels is very important to preventing hair loss in men. Restoring low testosterone levels is the key to solving many of the problems men face as they age, including hair loss. Men’s Hair Loss Treatment
There is a simple and effective solution for DHT-related hair loss. At ReNEW MAN we use a prescription shampoo additive containing several ingredients that stop testosterone conversion to DHT at the hair follicle. Unfortunately, many doctors often treat DHT hair loss with medications such as Propecia or Finasteride. Propecia restricts the conversion of testosterone to DHT. The problem with this protocol is that men using Propecia often have to choose between sex drive or hair loss since the medication does not resolve the true problem, DHT. There are also documented cases of men permanently losing their sex drive on this medication. Needless to say, our doctors do not use this medication in any of our treatments.
