Hot Flashes in Men
There are few moments more uncomfortable for a man than a hot flash. For years doctors always assumed that hot flashes for men didn’t exist, and that only women had hot flashes. What Causes Hot Flashes in Men?
Male Hot Flashes are not caused by external heat, but instead by a malfunctioning hypothalamus (the temperature control center in the brain). When a man experiences a hot flash the hypothalamus is receiving false signals that the body is overheated and causes the body to react immediately by expanding blood vessels in the skin to expel this non-existent excess heat. These false signals are caused by a hormonal imbalance. Hormone imbalance is also the cause of hot flashes in women, but in women the hormone primarily responsible for hot flashes is estrogen. The hormone primarily responsible for hot flashes for men is male testosterone. Poor diet and fitness and being overweight also contribute to hot flashes in men.
The experience of male hot flashes varies by individual. A hot flash may last a few minutes or as long as an hour. Depending on the hormone imbalance, some hot flashes in men can last over an hour. Like women, men will complain that their hot flashes are quite uncomfortable. Men often complain that they feel like their face and upper body is “burning up” or they complain of breaking out in a cold, clammy sweat.
Why am I having Male Hot Flashes?
Men tell us that their hot flashes are often triggered by stress. Current research also suggests that in addition to low t, high cortisol levels (the stress hormone) are a major contributing factor to male hot flashes. This means that hot flashes for men often occur at very inopportune times—speaking in front of a group, for example.
Not all men experience hot flashes as they age and proceed into male menopause. In our 12 years of experience in male hormone therapy at ReNEW MAN, we find hot flashes in men to be a complaint in about 20% of our new clients. If you are experiencing hot flashes, read on to learn how we can help you.
