What Are Men Night Sweats?
Night sweats in men is a common symptom of male menopause (andropause). If you are having trouble sleeping, experiencing hot or cold flashes at any time of the day, or feeling uncomfortably warm or cool in well air conditioned rooms, you may be experiencing male night sweats. Night sweats in men don’t always happen at night. Because body temperature perception in the hypothalamus is more extreme at night, most night sweats occur when we are asleep, but discomfort can occur at any time of the day.
Aside from being very uncomfortable, the loss of sleep that these symptoms cause can also lead to poor work performance, low attention span, irritability and fatigue. Unfortunately, Night sweats are only one symptom of andropause, so treatment should take into consideration balancing several important hormones, including testosterone, thyroid, estrogen, DHEA and cortisol.
What Causes Male Night Sweats?
Night sweats for men are not caused by external heat, but instead by a malfunctioning hypothalamus (the temperature control center in the brain). As testosterone levels decline throughout the body, hormones become more and more imbalanced. When this happens, the hypothalamus begins to receive mixed signals from neurotransmitters, and the reaction of the temperature control center in the brain likewise acts irrationally. This causes discrepancies in overall body temperature and leads to hot flashes and chills. When internal temperature builds in the night, the body needs to react immediately to cool itself, and night sweats in men occur.
