Weight Gain in Men
Hormones play an integral part in weight control. Weight gain in men is caused by a number of factors, including low male hormones.Remember how easy it was to lose weight when you were in your 20’s? Now think about the decline of that ability to control weight and how it has tracked in lock step with your decline in hormones.
Battling male weight gain with unhealthy low hormones levels is like trying to push a large rock uphill. Pushing a large rock is difficult – pushing it uphill is extremely difficult.

Facts About Male Weight Gain
- Fact: Hormones control metabolism, and metabolism controls the efficiency with which the body burns calories. Hormones control the enzymatic function of the body which in turn controls the cellular chemistry of calorie burning.
- Fact: Hormones control muscle condition. Even while resting or even sleeping, each pound of muscle burns 35 calories per day, while each pound of fat burns just 2. Consider the significant difference that exists during the carrying out of normal daily activity or the exertion of exercise if it is done with toned muscle rather than fat.
- Fact: Hormones control the desire and willingness to be active by removing a depression that accompanies low male hormones — key to weight control in men.
This is how it’s done:
- Get your hormones – testosterone, thyroid, DHEA, Cotisol, and, if possible, growth hormone – balanced and replaced to healthy levels.
- Watch your diet, mainly refined carbohydrates (google – “glycemic index”). Refined carbs causes the body to release excess insulin. Excess insulin signals the body to add and retain weight; weight gain. Eat foods with a low glycemic index.
- Be as active as your creative mind can conceive. Healthy hormones will make you want to be more active, because healthy hormones will increase energy, decrease fatigue and remove a depression that may be causing your mind/body to say, “I don’t feel like going for a walk. I think I will watch TV.”
- To the extent possible, control stress. Stress causes the body to produce excess cortisol, which also signals the body to build and retain fat.
The Solution to Weight Gain in Men
At reNEW MAN, we work with thousand of men. We have accumulated a wealth of helpful hints — some of them humorous. The bottom line is — you do what works for you. We will help you find it. There is much that you can do yourself; however, we can be your partner in achieving balanced male hormone replacement. Take a look at our Treatment Programs for some of the services we offer.
And last, but certainly not least about weight gain in men:
Remember to be patient. Do not try to do it all at once. For example, we do not support using a “published diet”. A large change usually means a large failure. Start by fixing your hormones that are causing weight gain in men. Then pick out obvious manageable pieces of the total puzzle and work on them until they become habit. And don’t worry, everyone “falls off the wagon”. It is those who persist that succeed.
If, you have made a commitment to the above, take a picture of yourself from your 20s or 30s and tape it to your bathroom mirror. That body can again be yours in six months or less.
