Cortisol in Men
Cortisol is called the “fight or flight” hormone because it triggers the release of adrenalin. For men cortisol is particularly important since we don’t often deal with stress effectively. Excess stress leads to excess cortisol, which can actually cause a man to age more quickly. The expression “stress kills” tends to be true. “Killer cortisol” as it is sometimes called is very catabolic (causes cell destruction) and when released in the body in excess during prolonged stress actually leaches needed nutrients from the body and destroys tissue in the body in general and the brain in particular and lowers the immune system, exposing the body to illness. Cortisol is critical to hormone balance. Read on to learn more about cortisol in men.

Facts About Male Cortisol
- Fact: Short-lived stress and elevated cortisol may actually be good for the body and brain because it prepares the body to deal with stress. i.e. Helping to ace a test, hitting a home run in a presentation to the boss, etc,.
- Fact: Nothing ages the body more than periods of extended cortisol release in the body.
- Note: Studies have shown excess cortisol causes loss of collagen in the skin at ten times the rate of other body tissues.
- Fact: The brain is particularly susceptible to the destructive aspects of cotisol. In the brain, neurons, which connect memory cells, are particularly susceptible to the effects of cortisol. There is also evidence to suggest that extended periods of excess cortisol also increases the threat of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Fact: Excess cortisol robs the body of needed nutrients. In times of stress the body marshals its resources–nutrients—to deal with the stress and as a result nutrients are leached from the body.
- Fact: The Stress Hormone Cortisol is a double edge sword. Pressure on the adrenal glands to produce excess cortisol to cope with excess stress can, and does, result in adrenal fatigue, i.e. the adrenal glands become exhausted. The body needs some cortisol, but not too much. When the adrenals become fatigued, they do not produce enough cortisol to meet the body’s daily needs. The result is feelings of fatigue, i.e., struggling to get through the day. See our adrenal fatigue page for more information.
- Fact: Excess and inadequate cortisol in Men can be treated.
