DHEA In Men
DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is the most plentiful hormone in the male hormone system and is often referred to as the master hormone because it is the precursor to other sex hormones. Low levels of DHEA contributes greatly to male hormone decline, and consequently to health in general and hormonal aging in particular. Like other male hormones, Dehydroepiandrosterone begins to decline in the mid to late 20′s. Read on to learn more about Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in men and treatment programs for low DHEA levels

Dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA and Men
- It provides strong support to the immune system including a protection against everything from colds to cancer. It is interesting to note, with few exceptions, low or deficient DHEA is found in virtually every illness.
- Like cortisol, DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is produced in the adrenal glands and is a positive counter-balance to the destructive properties of cortisol. Cortisol is produced in the body during times of stress.
DHEA is safe and provides significant benefits at a low cost. At reNEW MAN, our doctors test DHEA levels and provide a prescription for treatment. Instituting a male hormone therapy and addressing addressing DHEA levels is critical to a balanced hormone program.
More About DHEA in Men:
A 2008 study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, June 2008, measured serum DHEA in 940 men and women ranging from age 21 to 88, following them from 1978 until 2005. The researches found that low levels of DHEA-s showed a significant association with shorter lifespan and higher incidence of disease and that higher DHEA-s levels are a “strong predictor” of longevity and lower incidence of disease in men. No relationship was found between serum DHEA and longevity for women but did reflect a low incidence of disease during the study period.
DHEA, dehydroepiandrosterone, is the most prevalent and one of the most essential hormones in human health. Thus when we see the striking number of illnesses in which there are low levels of DHEA , a possible connection begins to appear. Even a 10 percent increase in DHEA levels is associated with a 48 percent decrease in mortality from all causes. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans lose 80 to 90 percent of their optimal levels of DHEA between ages thirty and eighty.
With few exceptions, low or deficient DHEA is found in every illness. Most critically, DHEA blocks carcinogenesis and retards aging, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even obesity.
Treatment Programs for Low DHEA Levels in Men
The DHEA story begins with cholesterol, the foundation chemical for brain, nerve tissue, and hormones. Of all natural biochemicals, cholesterol is the most essential and most common. It is unfortunate that medicine has maligned this critical and beneficial essence of life chemical. It is not cholesterol that is a problem. Metabolic errors and/or stress induced dysfunction raise cholesterol. In fact, not only can we not live without cholesterol, we make cholesterol even without eating it!
Stress interferes with the making / production of hormones by the body. In general, under stress the production of testosterone, thyroid, etct., by the body decreases. The magic of healthy DHEA can help restore the body’s ability to produce balanced hormones. Again, male hormone treatment is all about balance.
To promote this balance, reNEW MAN physicians offer treatment program designed to restore lost DHEA in men to a balanced level.
