Facts About Male Estrogen
- Fact: The male body needs a small amount of estrogen just as the female body needs a small amount of testosterone. High estrogen level in men is typically what must be avoided, although small amounts of estrogen in men help prevent osteoporosis and helps brain function.
- Fact: Excess estrogen in men can be unhealthy. It offsets the effects of testosterone, causes the body to retain water, can cause the prostate to swell and increases the risk of prostate cancer.
- Fact: In the past, scientists believed that testosterone caused prostate cancer. This is not true. We now know that healthy testosterone levels support prostate health. It is the conversion of testosterone to estrogen that increases the possibilities of prostate problems.
- Fact: High estrogen levels in men occur as men age and hormones decline. Men tend to become more sedentary, allowing the body to accumulate fat—primarily belly fat. Fat contains an enzyme called aromatase, which converts testosterone to estrogen.
- Fact: Concentrations of estrogen in the prostate increase as men age.
- Fact: Optimal estrogen level – Estradiol is 15pg tp 40pg.
The Dangers of High Estrogen Level In Men
Excess estrogen in men usually occurs as testosterone declines, which causes the male body to accumulate fat–primarily belly fat. Fat contains an enzyme called aromatase. Aromatase converts testosterone to estrogen, causing a man to exchange testoterone in his body for estrogen. As the body processes estrogen from the body, it may metabolize to the metabolite 16 alphahydroxylestrone and on to 4 alphahydroxyl, a carcinogen that can cause prostate cancer. Interestingly, this is the same process that can occur in a woman’s breast.
Our doctors control high estrogen level in men and as part of our treatment ask our clients to take a supplement called DIM that assists in estrogen metabolizing down safe pathways.
How to Decrease Estrogen Level in men
When we raise testosterone to healthy levels during hormone treatment, some testosterone may convert to excess estrogen. We counter that increase with an estrogen suppressant. Approximately 65% of new clients at ReNEW MAN have excess belly fat and may have an issue of converting testosterone to estrogen. Our doctors control the estrogen level as part of our treatment by placing men on an estrogen suppressant if necessary. This means that our doctors use a medication to suppress estrogen conversion as they raise testosterone levels. These clients work on diet and exercise as part of their estrogen treatment program. Changes in diet and exercise along with new healthier hormone levels lead to remarkable results. In about 3 to 6 months most of our clients have lost their excess belly fat and have stopped converting testosterone to estrogen. At this point they can be taken off the estrogen suppressant.
