Facts About Hormones and Aging
Below are a few facts about hormones and aging that every man should know:
- Fact: Age-related decline in male hormones is one of the primary causes of aging and chronic illness in men.
- Fact: The aging process can be managed. A study by the MacArthur foundation found that only 30% of how we age is embedded in our genetic makeup. The other 70% is in our control.
- Fact: For most people managing the aging process refers primarily to quality of life – people want a life free of chronic illness and want to maintain their current mental and physical abilities. This is entirely possible and safe with hormone therapy.
- Fact: All of the hormones and lifestyle issues dealt with on this website are important in managing the aging process, but stress and the stress hormone cortisol is the most important.
What Happens to my Hormones as I Age?
The gradual decline of the hormone (endocrine) system of the body starts in a man’s late 20s. This rate of decline determines how fast or how slowly a man will age. There is a well-accepted saying in medicine: “Male hormones do not decline because we age; rather, we age because hormones decline.” The key to hormones and aging is replacing hormones to healthy levels.
If you ask yourself when you felt your best, most alive, and most optimistic, most men will say between the ages of 20 and 30. You awoke everyday with renewed energy, you could lose weight and put on muscle quickly, you had fuller and longer lasting erections and sex was frequent and enjoyable. The reason your 20s and 30s are so memorable is because your hormones were in balance and your male body was doing what it was always been designed to do: be physically and sexually active.
You can’t turn back the clock, but you can rewind it. Thanks to groundbreaking research and new medical science in hormones and aging the phrase “age gracefully” is a thing of the past. Here is how it works: The key hormones– testosterone in men, male thyroid, DHEA, cortisol –are tested by an anti-aging trained physician. These hormones are replaced to levels the body had when it was at its healthiest, ages 25 to 30. Along with good lifestyle habits like proper diet, creative activity, and stress control, ReNEW MAN can help you hit the rewind button on aging. Most important is the fact that at ReNEW MAN we are experts and our programs are not only effective, but safe, too.

Healthy Hormones and Healthy Aging
Healthy aging is about maintaining quality of life. Most people are interested in living longer only if they can live it well and free from chronic illness. At ReNEW MAN we believe that healthy aging has four primary principles:
- You are what you eat – balanced diet is the foundation of good health
- Use it or lose it–be creatively active
- Stress Ages – no single issue causes the body to age more than stress
- Hormones do not decline because we age – we age because hormones decline” balance hormones to healthy levels
You are what you eat
Eating correctly and healthily is a challenge because our bodies are designed for simple basic foods. Unfortunately, with processed and bio-engineered food, leached soils etc., the foods available to us are anything but simple. Here are some basic guidelines that can aid in your efforts:
- Maintain a balanced diet – approximately 33% Protein; 33% Complex Carbohydrate; 33% Fat. It is important to minimize refined carbohydrates – become very familiar with the glycemic index — and limit the amount of saturated fat you consume.
- Don’t try to make a major change all at once—know where you are going and do it in small steps.
- Take a good multiple vitamin with iron – This is the best chance of leveling out and balancing the body’s needs as it gets older and gives the body what it is not getting in modern foods. We often know what is bad for the body, but we seldom know what the body is missing. With a multiple vitamin the idea is, like a cafeteria, we give the body a variety of things we believe it might need. Like a cafeteria, the body will then take what it needs and eliminate what it does not. Other vitamins and minerals you may want to consider adding that may not be in a multi-vitamin or not present in adequate quantity:
- Omega 3 oil such as fish oil
- Vitamin D3 — 3,000 to 5,000 iu’s per day – very important – there are many studies on the importance of vitamin D in preventing diseases.
- Vitamins E 400 to 800iu’s and C 1,000 to 2,000mg/day
- CoQ10 — 60 to 100mg / day
- Vitamin B multiple (complex)
- Mineral complex
Use it or lose it
Your caveman ancestors never went to the gym to pack on muscle or get stronger. Unless their life depended on it, they didn’t “go for a run,” either. At ReNEW MAN we don’t use the word “exercise” because our bodies were never designed to glide on an elliptical machine or lift free weights. When our bodies evolved, hundreds of thousands of years ago it was necessary to walk 200 yards or perhaps 2 miles just to get a drink, we had to be able to run quickly in order to save our lives and have the energy and muscle to lift, build, hunt, and protect. Now you do not get out of your car to raise the garage door. We are not saying you need to live like your ancient relatives, and if going to the gym is how you stay active, then there’s nothing wrong with that. Because a lot of men don’t like “exercise,” we are saying you need to take a “creative” step in that direction. Creative means do what works for you. If you can’t afford or do not like joining a gym, then build activity into your day other ways. The great outdoors was the gym of your ancestors, just without the saber-tooth tiger. Walking, taking the stairs rather than the elevator, or carrying your own golf bag are just a few ideas to get you creatively active.
Activity revs up the body allowing every part of your body to function more efficiently – heart, brain, circulation, etc. The revved up body is also in much better shape to deal with issues of stress.
Stress Ages
In stressful situations the brain tells the adrenal gland to produce a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is called the “fight or flight” hormone because it triggers the release of adrenalin. Cortisol evolved in the body as a mechanism to help man deal with threats and other stressful situations. In modern times if you want to see a saber-tooth tiger, you have to go to a museum, but stress still finds you in our present day. Whether at work or at home, everyday you are bombarded with stressful situations.
If you’re wondering what are the effects of stress, you should know a few things about how cortisol can affect your brain, immune system, how you age, and even your ability to absorb nutrients:
Stress and the Brain: Too much cortisol is destructive to body cells and tissues, but is particularly damaging to brain cells. Too much stress can release enough cortisol over time to contribute to brain deterioration, including Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Stress and the Immune System: Stress lowers the immune system, which makes the body more prone to sickness and disease. Enough stress can even promote heart disease.
Stress and aging: Stress can also cause the body to age prematurely. U.S. Presidents are usually a good example of just how devastating unmanaged stress can be on the male body. Compare a picture of Jimmy Carter when he entered the White House with a picture of him leaving office and the change is shocking. Significant aging of this sort has one primary cause: stress and excess cortisol. Studies have also shown that excess cortisol causes loss of collagen in the skin at 10 times the rate of other body tissues.
- Stress and Nutrition: When the body arms itself to deal with stress, it marshals its resources including the nutrients that fuel the body. The result is nutrients rapidly leached from the body, lowering the immune system and leaving the body vulnerable to illness.
- Stress and Hormones: The chemistry of the body is managed by the interrelationship of hundreds of hormones. As the body ages there is a natural decline and subsequent imbalance in these hormones. In men this phenomenon is called andropause, or male menopause. In women is it called menopause. Cortisol is a hormone that interacts significantly with Dehydroepiandrosterone primarily and secondarily with testosterone, thyroid, estrogen and growth hormone. Age-related hormone decline contributes significantly to the body’s vulnerability to stress, and makes dealing with stress very difficult for most men.
- Stress and exercise: Everyone knows that exercise and being active, is a good way to deal with stress. In addition to the body simply being in shape, exercise is the process that revs up the body’s chemistry to combat stress.
Dealing with stress can be difficult, but the following methods will teach you how to manage stress:
- Limit stress wherever and whenever possible
- Learn basic stress coping methods, such as deep breathing
- Be creatively active
- Test and restore DHEA and other hormones to healthy levels. DHEA is also an adrenal hormone and levels start to decline around age 26 to 28. At ReNEW MAN we test and treat DHEA, cortisol and other related hormones: testosterone, estrogen, thyroid and growth hormone.
- Eat a sensible diet
- Take a sensible regimen of supplements to help replenish the body in general, and the adrenals and brain in particular.
At ReNEW MAN we have answers to your hormone and aging questions. Please give us a call and let us know how we can help you: . You can also contact us through email and our free consultation page to learn more about hormones and aging or any symptoms of male menopause you may be experiencing.
