How Hormones are Produced in men
The pituitary is an important little gland in the bottom middle part of the brain. It, along with the hypothalamus, operates like a hormone thermostat. Instead of measuring temperature, it measures various male hormones, e.g. testosterone, thyroid, cortisol, etc. As the pituitary senses that the body needs a certain hormone, it secretes a stimulating hormone to stimulate selected glands to produce more of that hormone. For example, when it senses the body needs testosterone, it secretes Lutinizing Hormone (LH), which flows through the blood to the testes to stimulate them to produce more testosterone. As testosterone levels rise, the pituitary shuts LH production down. It works the same for the thyroid. Rather than secreting LH it secretes TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to stimulate the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormone.
Why Hormones Decline in Men
As the body ages the hormone production system in the pituitary gland slows in its ability to produce stimulating hormones and the respective glands age and slow in their ability to produce hormones such as testosterone and thyroid. The result is a decline in hormone levels in men.
A rising concern for many doctors is the effects of environmental pollutants particularly petrochemicals from insecticides etc., that cause the pituitary to slow prematurely. It is not uncommon in the last 5 years for us to see clients in their mid to early thirties with hormone levels of a 65 year-old man. Another cause of premature slowing of the pituitary is a blow to the head, particularly to the back of the head.
