What is Orgasm in Men?
The male orgasm seems to have psychological as well as a physical effects. Some men describe a focal experience, feeling an orgasm exclusively in the scrotum and the genital area. Other men report their orgasm as a sensation that spreads to various parts of the body. Others state that their orgasms are felt throughout their bodies. How much of the sensation of orgasm is physical and how much psychological is difficult to judge.
What Every Man Should Know About The Male Orgasm
- Fact: Male orgasm and ejaculation is not the same thing, although ejaculation, which is the ejecting of semen from the prostate through the penis, is usually accompanied by orgasm in men.
- Fact: Men experience orgasm through a series of steps involving interplay of, hormones, blood vessels, nerves and a variety of organs working together. The end result—orgasm—is often the ejaculation of sperm through strong muscle contractions.
- Fact: Testosterone is the fuel for the process leading to orgasm in men.
- Fact: The free testosterone found in a man’s bloodstream, along with other hormone interactions, determines the strength of his libido or desire for sex. Sex drive is key in kicking off the process that will lead to male orgasm.
- Fact: If a man has little or no sex drive, low t, his hormones are imbalanced or he is suffering from depression his body will not respond to sexual stimulation and will not be able to achieve orgasm.
- Fact: As men age they experience a decline in testosterone, which causes a decline in sex drive.
- Fact: The ability to have an orgasm also declines as men age.
- Fact: Sex drive is the foundation of an orgasm, and loss of sensitivity in the penis often accompanies the loss of sex drive.
- Fact: Replacing low t to healthy, younger levels will usually return sex drive and sensitivity to acceptable levels and thereby return or improve orgasm in men. Please see our treatment page for information on how to restore testosterone levels.
- Fact: Level of excitement during foreplay and sex determines level of sensitivity and strength of orgasm.
Common Questions Regarding Male Orgasm
-
Does having a vasectomy affect the ability or quality of orgasm?
- No. A vasectomy cuts off the flow of sperm to the prostate where it is mixed with semen before ejaculation. It has no effect on sex drive and/or orgasm. A man with healthy testosterone levels who has also had a vasectomy should still be able to achieve a quality male orgasm.
- Testosterone level has the greatest effect on the ability to have and quality of a male orgasm. Low t levels lower sex drive, which can make achieving an orgasm very difficult. Low sex drive and low t can also prevent you from achieving or maintaining an erection.
- Sex in general and orgasm in particular are affected by a man’s physical condition. Excess body fat causes estrogen levels in men to rise, which can devastate a man’s sex drive. Get in shape and your ability to achieve and enjoy male orgasm will increase.
- Talk to your doctor about using oxytocin, a hormone released by the pituitary gland that is important for muscle contraction during male orgasm. Please see our page on oxytocin for more information about erection and ejaculation.
