Facts About Testosterone Therapy for Men
- Q: Will my testicles shrink?
- A: No. Our doctors use one of two medications, both designed to increase LH levels in the body—see below—to stimulate the production of testosterone in the testicles and prevent this from happening.
- Q: Will my own production of testosterone be compromised by the use of testosterone?
- A: No. Stimulating the production of testosterone in the testicles will prevent this from happening.
- Q: Will I develop swollen or sore breasts – gynecomastia?
- A: No. Gynecomastia is caused by prolonged elevated estrogen. Our doctors control estrogen levels.
- Q: Will I increase my chances of developing prostate cancer?
- A: No. Testosterone does not cause prostate cancer. Studies have shown that having healthy levels of testosterone reduces the chances of developing prostate cancer.
- Q: Will I develop “roid rage” –i.e. — become excessively aggressive?
- A: No. If you were not excessively aggressive in your 20’s, you will not be so as a result of testosterone treatment. That said, some men will have a bit of “testiness,” or impatience, for a day or two while their bodies adjusts to testosterone levels it has not had in several years. It is similar to the feeling you learned to live with when you were in your late teens.
The Possible Side Effects of Testosterone Treatment
The pituitary gland is located in the brain and works as a hormone thermostat. It determines testosterone levels in the blood and secretes a hormone called lutinizing hormone (LH) that travels to the testicles and stimulates them to produce more testosterone when levels are low. Testosterone levels decline with age because the pituitary ages and produces less LH. Your testicles also become less sensitive to LH and therefore produce less testosterone as you age.
If testosterone alone were replaced in the body, the pituitary would think that the body has adequate levels and therefore it would not produce LH and stop sending it to the testes. The result would be that the testicles receive no signal to produce testosterone, i.e. they would not be stimulated, and as a result begin to shrink. This problem is easily avoided by using Clomiphine to stimulate the pituitary to produce more LH, or by using HCG (a metabolite of LH) to stimulate safe and occur naturally in the body. For men wanting to father children, it is best to use both clomiphine and HCG.
Studies from 20 years ago suggested that testosterone caused prostate cancer. These studies are outdated and incorrect because they did not check or monitor estrogen, a real cause of prostate cancer in men. When testosterone is given to men with excess belly fat, fat converts testosterone to estrogen, which can result in an increased rate of prostate cancer.
